The December Series- Photos, with Some Reflections from the Snowbank

The 160 Workshop Series II has come and gone with the snow squalls. Thank you everyone for braving the record snowfall, a blizzard the size of which has not been seen in at least 10 years. The sight of so many bundled up people trudging (and skiing!) through the snow and wind outside our windows to our doorstep warmed our hearts and our spirits. Thank you to Elizabeth B., Brad, Amber, Kelly, Eliza (and of course Beth!) for leading the workshops, and to all the eager participants.

We're planning our next edition for February, so stay tuned, we'll update our blog periodically.

A) Make your Nest the Best: Energy Saving Winter Tips
FULL!
Are you dreaming of a 'green' Christmas? Energy saving tips you can use to keep the warm air in, the cold air out, and your energy costs low. Hands on demonstrations of practical, low cost solutions for any living arrangements. Learn about door and window heat loss, furnace maintenance, hot water usage and other energy conservation tips. These ideas will help you save energy while also saving 'green'. A true win-win for the environment and for your wallet.

Bradley lives in the neighbourhood and takes a keen interest in all things green. Though he’s an impeccable dresser, he mostly enjoys the lesser things in life, like getting his hands dirty and his knees wet.

b) A quickie with 2 girls at once
FULL!
This workshop, hosted by crafters Beth Sweeney and Eliza Von Baeyer, will give you a whole whack of demos on quick, easy, HOT and inexpensive gift ideas for the holidays. In addition, you will take home your very own - HOW-TO-HOLIDAY booklet with a description of everything we teach. Stencils, magnets, books, bags, pins, paper flowers, and so much more!

Bring some extra magazines if you have them…

Beth - lives at 160 Primrose and she's a self-proclaimed problem-solving idea's person. She prefers to make art for people then just for the sake of making art, making the holidays a particularly fun time for her.

Eliza - is a guest at 160 Primrose and is a public servant by day, PhD student by night and crafter here and there in between. She hosts a weekend 'Crafternoon' throughout the winter months and sells her jewellery and artsy-craftsy wares on the outdoor festival circuit in Spring-Summer.

c) Intro to Crocheting
FULL!
This workshop will introduce participants to crocheting skills such as how to chain, single crochet, crochet in the round and decrease. If you don’t know what any of that means, then maybe it’s time to find out. At the end of the workshop participants will have a small gift to give to Stephen Harper , Mayor Larry O'Brian....or a loved one.

Amber’s great-grandmother taught her how to crochet when she was five. Her first projects were a sleeping bag for her Barbie and slippers for her Cabbage Patch doll. As she grew older she became more interested in horses and then boys and forgot about her hook and yarn. Many years later a friend re-introduced her to the craft in university and Amber has had crochet fever ever since. One of her favourite winter pastimes is curling up on the couch with a cup of tea, a hook and a ball of yarn.

Elizabeth is a singer/songwriter/music teacher from Ottawa. She learned to sew as a child. Nowadays she mostly sews for herself and friends, but she also sells her work at Workshop Boutique on Dalhousie under the brand name Kallisti. In the past she has made costumes for several theatre companies in Montreal, such as Geordie Productions, Tuesday Night Café, the Saidye Bronfman Centre, and the McGill Theatre Department.
*This includes all people who get-together and plot revolution regularly, semi-regularly or once-in-a-while. After all, we need to look good while we’re at it.

b) Yes, You Can: Drawing, illustrating and zine-making for those who think they can’t - with Montreal-based Artist Sarah Mangle

FULL!

"I'm not an artist, I can't draw" - well think again.

Sarah Mangle will show you that drawing, illustrating and zine-making, is within reach, and help you to realize that life is too short for creativity hang-ups. Whether you are a Pre-Raphaelite, or someone who has no idea what that means, all abilities are welcome.

Sarah currently lives in Montreal...although maybe not for much longer. She is a kind loving soul originally from Wolfville NS, who looks great in lime green hotpants. She is a musician and a wet-nosed hero. She is a sex-educating, radio dj who draws, makes zines about her alter-ego squirrel grrl and is a dear friend of many.

c) Hostess with the mostess (Kelly Butler): entertaining the masses without breaking a sweat
FULL!

"Food does get burnt, and I have frequently wanted to kill people (always one of the kids, not the guests). Stuff happens; roll with it."

Kitchen-diva Kelly will share a few tricks and tips that make entertaining easy (easier). Shortcuts, secrets, and the inside scoop on successful dinner parties. Kelly believes in the importance of sitting down and sharing a meal with those we love, and that's how she defines hospitality. ANYONE can do this;

Kelly can say this emphatically since she's been feeding friends and family since she was a youngin'. She's had more than one dinner party on the living room floor (18, first apartment, no furniture...)
